Welcome to Day Five of Stink Week 2016!

Day 5: Hearing Aids - Wear Them Proudly!

REMINDER: Every day of Stink Week we will be posting information to learn and challenges to try! Remember to come back every day to learn, share, and let us know how it all goes! If you share more of the facts and challenges during the day, you can log back in again at the end of the day and let us know that too!

Facts

1. Hearing aids make sounds louder.

  • Sound goes through a microphone.

  • The sound waves are converted to electrical signals & are sent to a receiver.

  • The receiver amplifies (increases) the sound waves and sends them to the ear through the ear hook & ear mold.

2. Children as young as four weeks old can wear hearing aids. It can be hard to keep hearing aids on young children. Many parents use caps & headbands to help keep them in place.

3. Early access to sound is extremely important in the language development of  young children. This is why The Decibels Foundation funds the Sound Start Hearing Aid Loan Program at Boston Children's Hospital. Children with hearing loss can borrow hearing aids so they start hearing sounds while their parents work on getting them thier own hearing aids.

Challenges

Challenge #1: Classrooms can be very noisy. An FM System can help a student with a hearing aid in the classroom. Watch this video to see how: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBrnvGKLF_Q

Challenge #2: Wearing hearing aids can make a child feel different from everyone else. Learn how one four year old boy and his mom got Marvel Comics to create a superhero with a hearing aid.
