Exploring Pragmatics

Dr. Dianne Toe’s background is in Psychology, Audiology, Deaf Education and Teacher Education. She has worked in these fields since 1983, with 28 years as an academic at the Universities of Melbourne and Newcastle and now Deakin University. Previously, Dr. Toe served as the Head of Renwick College at the Royal Institute for Deaf and Blind Children in Sydney, Australia and the Vice President of the Victorian School for Deaf Children. Dr. Toe has extensive experience in preparing teachers to work in inclusive settings and to support the learning of children who deaf and hard of hearing. Dr. Toe has published widely on the topic of pragmatic skills of children and young people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
For this presentation, Dr. Toe will describe pragmatics, highlight the importance of pragmatics among children with reduced hearing, and share information about how pragmatics are both assessed and addressed in school-based settings. This presentation is likely to appeal to professionals and graduate students from a variety of fields who work with deaf and hard of hearing children, including Teachers of the Deaf, School-based paraprofessionals, Speech-language Pathologists, Direct Service Providers, Counselors and Social Workers, Linguists, and Administrators or other personnel who work with deaf and hard of hearing children.
